Das klingt fürwahr nach einer spannenden Angelegenheit:
die Rede ist von der neuen, brandaktuellen Zusammenarbeit des
Saxophonisten David Murray mit dem KontrabassistenIngebrigt Haker Flaten
und Schlagzeuger Paal Nilssen-Love.
Natürlich erinnert hier einiges spontan an die legendären
Trioformationen, denen der Saxophon-Koloss David Murray in den 80ern und
90ern vorstand. In Wels war er 1989 zu Gast mit dem Bassisten Ray
Drummond und dem Schlagzeuger Ralph Peterson (sein“originalstes“ Trio
stammt noch aus den späten 70ern und formierte Drummer Steve Mccall
sowie den Bassisten Fred Hopkins; alles auch dokumentiert auf dem
italienischen Black Saint Label).
David Murray ist auf hunderten von Tonträgern vertreten. Das enorme
Talent des 1955 geborenen, hauptsächlich dem Tenorsaxophon und der
Bassklarinette verschriebenenen Musikers wurde rasch erkannt, und so
verwundert es kaum, dass einige Kritiker in seinem Spiel das Feuer und
die Kraft John Coltranes wiederentdeckten. Albert Ayler, Sunny Murray
und Sonny Rollins sind nur einige der großen Inspirationsquellen
Murrays, dessen Musik immer wieder als schwarze Melange aus Gospel, Free
Jazz, Blues, Soul und Afro-karibischen Klängen bezeichnet wurde. Wie
gesagt, legendär sind seine Trio Arbeiten mit diversen Rhythmusgruppen
und vor allem auch sein Mitwirken im World Saxophone Quartet mit Hamiet
Bluiett, Julius Hemphill und Oliver Lake.
Ingebrigt Haker Flaten und Paal Nilssen-Love bilden ein unschlagbares
Rhytmusteam, möglicherweise das kompakteste und auch wildeste
vorstellbare Bass- und Schlagzeugduo. Gemeinsam treiben sie im Verband
mit Mats Gustafsson das phänomenale Trio „The Thing“ voran, das auch
durch seine Zusammenarbeiten mit MusikerInnen wie Neneh Cherry und
zuletzt James Blood Ulmer zu glänzen vermochte.
Bassist Ingebrigt Haker Flaten ist einer der umtriebigsten Musiker der
Jazzszene. Er arbeitete mit MusikerInnen und Bands wie Bugge Wesseltoft,
Joshua Redman, Raoul Björkenheim, Christian Wallumröd, Ken Vandermark,
Motorpsycho, Atomic, Lotte Anker.
Zuletzt präsentierte er die großartige Formation The Young Mothers.
Schlagzeuger Paal Nilssen-Love ist ein erblich stark vorbelasteter
Jazz-Schlagzeuger, waren doch seine Eltern Betreiber eines Jazzclubs in
Stavanger. Frühe Mentoren waren Bugge Wesseltoft und vor allem Frode
Gjerstad. Er spielte in Bands von Hakon Kornstad und Ken Vandermark und
war Mitglied in Brötzmanns legendärem Chicago Tentet.
Jüngere Zusammarbeiten sind die Duos mit Arto Lindsay und Terrie
Hessels, das Trio Arashi mit Akira Sakata und Johan Berthling, die Band
Ballister mit Dave Rempis und Fred Lonberg Holm, das Quartet Lean Left
mit Andy Moor, Terrie Ex und Ken Vandermark. Außerdem betreibt er mit
Large Unit seit einigen Jahren sein eigenes Orchester und neuerdings das
Projekt New Brazilian Funk.
